In 1917, the oxide plant was built and created 200 additional jobs on the complex.Įmpire Zinc hit its peak time during the 1920s under the supervision of R.S. The plant added a dry mill in 1916, which employed roughly 100 men. If any of the products requires further treatment, it is dried in the magnetic separator, which is a comparatively new machine and a very valuable one.” The overs from the jig go to a set of rolls and screens and, after treatment, go to the tables. The over from the fine screens go to a jig and the material from the fine screens is treated on Wilfley tables. From the bin by elevator to roller screen, what goes through the screen goes to finer screens, what fails to go through is crushed again. “From the crusher, the ore goes into coarse rolls and thence to storage bins. “The process of treatment is as follows the ore first goes into a crusher and goes through many processes automatically by means of elevators until the product leaves the magnetic separator, the zinc and lead concentrate each being separated and ready for shipment,” the article stated. Livingston, a commander for Company C of the Colorado National Guard, retained the general manager role until 1916 when he was called into active service to help with trouble on the Mexican border.Īn article from the Cañon City Clipper in April 1902 goes into a detailed description of how the new company worked. In 1902, a large expansion occurred under A.R.Livingston who was the general manager. In the beginning, the complex consisted of a crushing plant and a magnetic separator. The zinc oxide was used in the manufacturing of rubber and paint. In its early days, the plant originally treated mining ores from Leadville and the ore was sent to Northern Chicago to be smelted. Wetherell, the plant implemented a new way of treating ore invented by Wetherell’s brother, J.C. In April 1902, the completed plant was fully operating when Mineral Zinc Company christened the site as The Empire Zinc Company. It is five stories high, the highest portion being 60 feet.” The main building is being constructed now, which is enclosed, but not completed, 130 feet long by 45 feet wide. The Clipper article goes on to state, “They are at present preparing for the concentration of ores, capacity 50 tons per day. ![]() ![]() The land had a coal mine and the company planned to use the mine to mine its own fuel. In September 1901, construction was underway on the new plant being built in southwest Cañon City. The Mineral Zinc Company, based out of New Jersey, was one of the largest zinc producers in the Union, according to a 1900 Cañon City Clipper article, and George Schaffer convinced them to build in Cañon City. A deal orchestrated by George Schaffer brought one of the largest employers to Fremont County in the late 1800s.
